And how are we doing with our viewer figures? Well we just passed 300,000 viewer minutes, that’s over 100,000 minutes per week and growing. AWESOME! So good in fact that we have been ‘noticed’, and we may have something VERY cool to reveal next week. The growing viewer figures also means that we WILL beat the Oscars in around six months! With episodes running at least an hour and a half long, the three they’ve assembled thus far have been chock-full of tips and trade tricks that aspiring DIY filmmakers should make an integral part of their weekly coverage. You won’t want to miss a single episode, and I don’t say that lightly.
I blew through their third installment last night and then proceeded to tell everyone about it on all available 2.0 channels. Chris and Judy are turning out to be quite the charismatic presenting pair (they co-write/co-produce projects out of their Ealing Studios cubbyhole-cum-office) and they seem to always be up for a good gag in between their more serious sections, when constructive information is actually being conveyed.
I warn you well in advance, The Production Office is a large time commitment, so unless you’re either deadly serious about filmmaking or are looking for a strategic edge over the guerrilla filmmaking hoi-polloi, I suggest you take it in small doses.
This is what you can you expect to find over the course of the 90 or so delectable minutes of their cast:
* industry expert guests who share insider tricks of the trade (I suggest you take notes!). Men and women who seem genuinely interested in the spread of quality independent product. True indie filmmaking mavens who care about quality art and the indie filmmaking community as a whole. People like Simon Cox and David Wilkinson, the latter a font of knowledge about the distribution, business-y side of the craft. Latest episode had Wilkinson speaking fulsomely about the trends he’s been noticing over the course of his career as a small-scale distributor. It was a great overview.
* Chris Jones is a very capable interviewer, albeit if occasionally hard on poor Judy, who was sporting the best pair of “balloon hands” the other day. Jones asks meaningful, timely questions that most indie filmmakers might themselves imagine asking were they sitting on the hot seat. Relevant queries that can be put into practice today, a mini-example of the courses Chris himself offers either at his site or for hire (did you know he even sells a pocket book?).
* the show encourages active user participation. Chris and Judy conduct at least two contests over the duration of their show and it breaks up the more informational bits which otherwise demand a viewer’s full-on attention.
It was a touch sad to hear that production of this cast had really been cutting into their production time on Rocketboy, the latest project in the Jones canon. That instead of the weekly Thursday livecast, our producers have opted for a one-on, one-off show with a special broadcast that will slip into the gap on weeks when they’re not in front of the live ones and twos.
Thanks to the magic which is Google Alerts, I learned how Chris had linked to an earlier post I’d whipped up about the new role of the PMD, the Producer of Marketing and Distribution, a new spin on the traditional production coordinator’s role in that with the advent of social media technologies, a need has arisen for personnel to monitor the various channels on a regular basis. Of course, Reiss is the by-now indie community DIY darling and foremost indie community expert on self-distribution.
Jon’s also author of the amazing Think Outside the Box Office, a title you’ll want to have on your shelf (and here I completely agree with Chris who said on this past cast that you should get your hands on an actual paper copy of TOTBO, not the PDF, to ensure you actually read it!). And don’t be afraid make your notes right inside the book, as I’d done.
It will become one of the more well-thumbed copies in your indie filmmaking library.
Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Watch The Production Office (in my opinion, of course):
1. Indie filmmaking is about community: Given how independent filmmakers are frequently challen
ged to do as much as they can with as remarkably little as they can, it’s important to get help from your friends.
2. Chris and Judy are industry-tested and have shot bankable titles: Your hosts aren’t mere aspiring shooters. They are bona fide filmmakers who have decided to turn some of their divided attentions – see point #1 – to reaching out to the indie community.
3. Guests are reputable names in their areas of expertise: Jan Dunn, Genevieve Jolliffe, Simon Cox, David Wilkinson. These are just four cats who have already made appearances on The Production Office. Future show guests promise to be equally as relevant.
4. Time-saving tips: As filmmakers, we sometimes get stuck in our habits. It’s not that those habits aren’t successful, just that there are those attempting to do similar things and if you listen to them closely enough, you might catch something that can help you in your workflow. According to my cast notes, I’ve got a few things I’m going to put into play ASAP!
5. Kickass swag: I’m not big on contests, in general, but the hosts are offering up some great swag for softball contest questions, ps. Books, DVDs, vouchers, and passes to events. You’ll want to tune in, especially if you’re based in the UK.
6. Indie titles you might not have caught: I’d never heard of Simon Cox or Jan Dunn before watching their two shows, even though I’m quite familiar with the A-Listers they’ve worked with in their own projects (Jan’s been fortunate enough to work with Bob Hoskins in Ruby Blue). Now I’m going to try to get my hands on some of their stuff.
7. A break in the action: Like an elastic band, sometimes you’ve got to go away to come back. If you’re creatively verklempt and can’t find a project that you’d be willing to throw yourself under the train tracks for (which is the true arbiter of a film’s value), subscribe to this stream and let your mind wander for about an hour or so. I’m convinced you’ll find your mojo again.
8. Judy Goldberg’s madcap antics: As the unsung heroine of The Production Office, Judy is, like Reggie Jackson was in his time, the straw that stirs the drink. Chris is Christmas Morning fortunate-as to have her as his winglady. Believe it: Judes’ humorous asides are what brand this cast.
9. Chris Jones’ deadpan: You can almost feel Chris wanting to break out of his shell, but he keeps it under wraps. Kudos. But just once, perhaps he’ll crack. That’s why we continue to watch.
10. Inspiration: Just about the most important reason you won’t want to miss a single episode. There are people out there doing what you’re doing and who have succeeded at the grand game. There is hope.
