A good friend of mine, a Chinese film maker (who will remain unnamed for reasons that will become obvious) came to see me yesterday. He told me of the time he spent in China this last year, how he met and worked with many amazing film makers, and how he LOVED watching our weekly TV show about indie film making, The Production Office. That was, until the Chinese authorities banned us and blocked the feed! Amazing. Banned in China!
He also told me that he has to laugh when he hears British film makers complaining. He said, and I paraphrase, ‘we don’t know how lucky we are in the West, we can make any story we like without fear of the government… it’s a VERY different world in China’.
For me it was a bit of a wake up call.
You know we always compare ourselves to people who are ‘luckier’ than we are (I don’t believe in luck, but for now let’s just use that word). We never compare ourselves to people who have less opportunity. People who are ‘unluckier’.
And yet we live in a time with amazing technology, boundless frontiers (well maybe China), and the cost of film making has never been so low. And it’s going to continue to drop. So next time I feel like having a moan, I will reflect on those Chinese film makers who STILL make amazing films against odds that I cannot even begin to imagine. Team Guerilla Film salutes our Chinese brothers and sisters who make their films under repressive conditions. Go, go, go!
