Is IndieGoGo Right For You? A Guide To Crowdfunding, Part 1: Podcast with IndieGoGo founder Danae Ringelmann

INdieGoGo Danae Ringelmann
Crowd Funding has become the first step toward financing that many indie film makers make. Of course, it’s often part of a bigger financial picture, but it can represent that all important seed money, gap funding, completion money or even represent complete budgets.

When I made ‘Gone Fishing’ I used crowd funding for the entire budget. Of course at the time, the term didn’t exist (or at least it wasn’t popularised). I just came up with the idea of asking everyone I ever met for £50 as a way to finance the film. And it worked for me back then, as it’s working for many film makers today. Though with IndieGoGo and other crowd funding sites, it’s certainly easier and faster to get going.

IndieGoGo Over the coming days I am planning a series of blogs about Crowd Funding, kicking off with this podcast that I recorded yesterday with Danae Ringelmann from IndieGoGo – what a coup to have one of the head honchos in the Production Office! What impressed me most about her and the IndieGoGo philosophy is that they clearly believe that everyone should have their chance, an equal opportunity if you like, to make a success of their project. It’s core to what they do.

Anyway, see what you think (and yes I do ask ‘why not use Kickstarter?’).

And remember, we have our own IndieGoGo campaign running too. If nothing else, please just check out our page here…

http://www.indiegogo.com/The-Production-Office-LIVE-Season-2 and leave us some feedback. Over the coming days, we will use our own campaign as a kind of lab, discussing what we have done, what is working, what isn’t, and how we are going to improve it. We will also be sharing tips, tricks, success and failure stories from other notable campaigns so that you can mount YOUR successful crowd funding campaign too.

Onwards and upwards!

Brilliant, thanks Chris. So much info I was forced to take 7 pages of notes. “Don’t wait for perfect.” ‘Do it with others.” “Make it personal.’ Just a few of the many tidbits of truth that should be essential to all independent filmmakers.

Speaking of crowd participation for art, become a part of this crowd funded indie movie: http://igg.me/p/20268?a=91789&… Re-blog, re-tweet and donate and get a copy of the movie. Thx.
