Could This Be My Last Blog Post from Typepad? Yes the time has come for me to leave Typepad and leap into bed with a self hosted install of WordPress (and still at www.ChrisJonesBlog.com). It’s been a long time coming too, and frankly it would have happened a year ago had Typepad not made it near impossible to export my blog fully.
This move from one platform to another raises a very important issue, that of the long term agreements and relationships into which we enter – be it a blog host, accounting package, email name, editing platform, mobile phone contact…
You see, like any meaningful relationship, you will probably spend a long time together, often under pressure and under financed. And it’s only until you can use your technology in anger that you will find out if it really is the solution for you.
Truthfully, I am glad to see the back of Typepad. It’s an expensive and outdated platform that is lacklustre and locks its users in.
And if I were a Final Cut Pro post production company, I’d be pretty furious with Apple right now. Once more, Apple have proved themselves to be selfishly obsessed by their bottom line and not at all interested in the community of FCP users around the world (and for that matter graders using Color). Hey, why would they care about film makers and editors, they are a company who r.
So what is the moral of this tale?
Make sure whatever technology you get into bed with is exactly what you need, at the price point you can afford and sustain, from a company you can trust to develop and update… and ALWAYS keep your eye on an exit strategy.
So farewell Typepad… I won’t miss you!
(and hopefully Hello to WordPress in a day or two…)
Onwards and upwards!
