Are you a digital native or a digital immigrant?

Some people take to the internet, to social media, online connectivity and community, like it’s their first language, like they are literally hard wired into it. They are digital natives. To them, using this technology is effortless, almost like a reflex.

But for the rest of us, we need to learn how to use these new tools, how to communicate through new channels. It’s like when a Londoner moves to the South of France – and they find themselves in a land with a new language and new customs. It’s not THAT hard, but it’s always going to be harder than it is for a French person because they are not a native. It’s never going to be their first language.

I am a digital immigrant.

I was late to Social Media, seeing it more of a distraction than anything else. What success I have had has been through application, trying out, getting out of my depth, making friends, observing and learning. Just like any other immigrant would have too do.

Our day to day lives are rapidly transitioning into a digital realities – relationships, businesses, collaborations, education, socialising… all have extremely large digital components now. And the digital native speaks these languages fluently. They will always have that edge.

But here is the good news.

The land where the digital natives live is very open and free, and filled with wisdom and fun. And like most places in the real world, when you really get to it, past your fears, you find that natives are friendly are usually happy to help.

Onwards and upwards!

As I said to you at the seminar, I think I’m a digital tourist who speaks loudly & slowly! Maybe if I inhabit this place long enough, I’ll ‘go native’.

Thanks curating a great couple of days Chris…Jon is an engaging, interesting speaker.
