Networking in Cannes tip… be remembered

Mike Mindel Next May we will be taking a group of film makers to Cannes for their very first Cannes experience.

Cannes, or any film event, is about many things, but networking is paramount. The key is to create relationships, but in an event as hectic as Cannes (which is often a sensory and mental overload), even if you create that relationship, how on earth can you be remembered?

We all have business cards, and on my desk I have a stack of other peoples cards. When I look through them, honestly, I struggle to remember who half of these guys are. And that’s why the card that was handed to me today by my good mate and film producer Mike Mindel, is such a great reminder of ABOVE ALL,  BE REMEMBERED!

First off, he has his photo on the back. We film makers are often quite visual people, we may remember a face where we may not remember a name or a company. So that makes a nice visual connection.

Second, between his name and logo there is a nice white space to write… ‘Brit producer, met at the XYZ party, send a synopsis when home’.  You should always have some space where people can write a short note after meeting you. No matter how cool you think an all black card might look, it’s always better to be remembered than it to be cool. So don’t get glossy cards, get ones you can write on.

Onwards and upwards!

Yes, I once made up some uber-cool all-gloss-black business cards with a teeny weeny bit of white space. Everyone complained they couldn’t write down any details of what I said to them… Ouch.
