It isn’t grit or physical prowess that gives the feminine her heroic stature; it is her courageous ability to descend into the dark, forbidding places that lie within each of us in order to retrieve our essence. Strong stories aren’t masculine or feminine, they are a balance of both and understanding how to engage the feminine heroic will add a great deal of depth to a writer’s palette.
For years I have been saying create stories with female leads as the talent pool of actors available is so under utilised. Great actresses often get offered wife of… sister of… girlfriend of… until they get older when they are offered mother of… aunt of… grandmother of… and all because there are fewer writers and film makers creating stories with killer female story arcs. Trust me on this, if you write a script with a strong, multi-dimensional female protagonist, you will have amazing talent at your table asking to read for it.

It is a lovely sentiment and I agree there is a huge talent pool. What there isn’t, is money for films starring women. It’s the bulk of the scripts I have, but I can’t tell you how many times I have heard, who’s the male lead? who are you going to surround your female lead with to sell? The common expectation is that film starring women not only don’t have an audience in the US, but are a struggle to sell in the overseas, bread and butter international market. So just know if you choose to write a script with women as leads you will have a more difficult time financing and therefore making your movie.
Too true. the issues are multiple, but a greater palette. All my scripts are of female central characters. My issues are bringing out the story content/structure that supports their role…!

Females have always but with some exceptions have played second fiddle to Male leads, Hollywood is male dominated, never the less it depends on the genre and the star power of the female lead.
