Yesterday I met with my old pal and editor, Eddie Hamilton.
Eddie cut ‘Gone Fishing’ (trailer here) for us and most recently (you can buy it here), he has spent 18 months working on Kick-Ass as one of the editors, alongside Jon Harris and double Oscar winner Pietro Scalia, who Eddie speaks about in this interview.
I filmed this video blog with him as I wanted to give you access to his world, to this moment in his life, as the biggest film of his career hits the screens. It’s very exciting and inspiriting to see him in his element!
We spoke for just over half an hour and he was brimming wit the usual infectious energy that makes him everyone’s favourite editor. After the interview, he played me a few of the music cues from Kick-Ass, which I must admit, sounded awesome.
Eddie also shared some technical information, which the editors among us will find fascinating.
KICK-ASS was shot on Anamorphic 35mm, telecined to HDCAM, then digitized and cut on Avid Media Composer at 1080p/24 DNxHD36 resolution. For those who are interested you can download Eddie’s original post production flowchart here. For a more technical discussion about how Avid Media Composer was used during the edit, check out Eddie’s interview with Digital Production Buzz (from March 10th), which you can download here, visit the show’s website here, or listen with the player below.

And so I, along with you (I hope), will be heading to my local theatre this weekend to watch the movie…
And remember, you can buy Gone Fishing on BluRay and DVD here…
Onwards and upwards!

Fantastic interview.
It’s great to see Eddie’s enthusiasm for what he does. I’ve seen Kick Ass and it does indeed Kick Ass.
I also enjoyed learning about the $100 WD TV media player that plays high definition quicktime at 1080p 24 fps, full HD resolution for portable screenings. (That’s on the Digital Production Buzz audio interview).
Well done Eddie!
The trailer hits with a blues brothers style mojo.
One and a half years of very hard work to create the directors vision. Wow sounds brilliantly creative.
Really interesting interview – long may Eddie rule!
Yes, Brilliant Interview….
Want to see the film soon as!
Well done Eddie…
Just watched the interview. Great and hugely informative (I might start sending out chocolate bars with speculative CV’s though I can’t quite stretch to four fingers, the most I can invest in is 2 fingers per CV).
Following Eddie’s comments about the various screenings of the film it’s quite funny now listening to this weeks Kermode podcast. Dear Mark is adamant that it’s one of the least test screened film in history.
According to mark; “It does not look like a film showed it to a test audience”
It evidently comes across as film not made to satisfy any particular demographic or suffering the influence of the dreaded involvement of the studio. Maybe that was the key thing that struck a chord with many people and whilst listening to Eddie it was clear there was some feedback from having screened the film it was certainly not in the standard studio controlled clinical pen and paper mould but something much more organic.
That the film has been so warmly received by most audiences (barring the Daily Mail) will hopefully lead to more of the same in future.
I can’t wait to go and see it tomorrow and make up my own mind. Though I secretly fear my hopes have been raised to near unattainable levels. If it is not the Citizen Kane of comic book movies I may leave the cinema slightly deflated!
Interesting observations, Russel. Test screening is a subject worthy of a lengthy blog-post, Chris – get it right and you can transform a film for the better, get it wrong and you can destroy it. Essential viewing: The Hamster Factor, a feature-length documentary on 12 Monkeys available on the DVD (made by the guys who did Lost In La Mancha). Their test screening experience is an extraordinary watch.
I have a question for Eddie,
Did he cut the trailer as well or does someone from the studio do that?
Comes out in Australia on the 8th of April! I can’t wait to see it.
Fascinating stuff. My girlfriend doesnt get it but hey….
Great movie too.
Well done and thanks for sharing the knowledge and thanks Chris for getting it to us as well.
Kick Ass is probably the best edited film I’ve seen in a long while.
